Kab area fishing, hunting and outdoors report.
HUNTERS SUPPER THIS SAT NOV 9th. Details below!
Winter here to stay?
A couple inches of fresh snow on the ground and skim ice starting to form on most bays and shorelines would indicate we are. Tom Cod is almost completely froze and it looks to stay that way. Smaller area lakes are almost ice covered if not already. The main basin on Kab is open but that is usually the last to freeze. With the cold nights and temps not getting above freezing in the foreseeable future, we may have an early ice season.
Fishing has been virtually non existent so nothing to report. With that being said fishing can still be good this time of year if you are willing to brave the frigid temps. Whitefish netters had a good season but most have moved out. Spearing season begins on Nov 15th and would suspect there will be some usable ice but make sure to call ahead for the most recent ice reports. Sandy Point will be opening back up the first week of December and will begin their spearing activities. If you haven’t experienced sitting over a spearing hole and watching a big pike move through, it is definitely worth a trip. Give Sandy Point a call and they can set you up with everything you need!
With Canada freezing up tight bigger northern ducks have been moving through the area which is also ahead of schedule. Some good hunting has been had and scouting is key to a successful hunt. Grouse hunting has been great with most having having success bagging birds.
Deer season is almost upon us and bucks are actively seeking does. If we can keep a little snow on the ground, it should make for a great opener! Don’t forget to stop into Gateway for your licenses and after you get the big one you can register and have your deer weighed.
The Kabetogama town hall will be hosting the annual hunters supper on Saturday Nov 9th from 3-9 p.m. The menu includes turkey, beef and the fixings to fill you up! Pre-sale tickets are available at Gateway and the Rocky Ledge. 2/$25. Tickets at the door are $14/ea and $5 for ages 7 yrs and under. There will also be a bake sale so get there early! **ALL PROCEEDS GO TO OUR PERMANENT HELICOPTER LANDING PAD AT KAB FIRE HALL. This event is always a great time to mingle and listen to local banter!
As we dive into winter we will continue to post ice and snow conditions as well as fishing reports and any other activities. You can also check out the lake cam from Gateways website to keep on eye on the lake!
Safe travels and we’ll see you soon!
