Kab fishing report. 6/28/2021

The bite is finally improving.

Not much to talk about recently but the pattern has changed and the bite has improved considerably.

Walleye have changed their feeding habits and are now focusing on the recent mayfly hatch. As suspected, even though a mayfly hatch can frustrate anglers, it has walleyes more concentrated and easier to find. 18′-24′ has been a target depth for most finding active fish now starting to school up off mid lake lake reefs and shoreline points. Lindys tipped with leeches and crawlers have been best. Without much wind lately, early and late in the day, even well past dark are your best bet. If the wind is blowing, move into and along the deep weed lines. Pitching a jig and half crawler into these areas can be deadly. If you visit the Kabetogama Lake Association website, many of the guides and resorts listed are also doing reports so there is plenty of information out there to help you focus in on areas to target.

During the day, spend your time targeting pike over weed beds and shallow reefs as they have been extremely active. Any large baits are working and numerous large pike are being caught. Smallmouth bass can also be found in these areas as well.

It has been crazy busy around Kab! The blueberry pancake breakfast on Sunday at the Kab town hall was a huge success. Speaking of blueberries, this year is going to be interesting. With the late freeze and then lack of moisture and hot weather, you will have to do some searching to find them. Your best bet is to look near swampy low lying areas and any of the numerous islands on the lake.

As we head into the 4th of July holiday there are more canoes and kayaks venturing out on the lake heading to campsites and sightseeing. Please be careful and respect their space as they don’t have the mobility to change course and avoid the bigger boats.

Here at Gateway, we continue to to be very busy. As most know, trying to find anyone willing to work these days can be a challenge so I would like to give a big thanks to the wonderful crew we have as we are short staffed and they are doing a wonderful job keeping things running smoothly. We can’t thank them enough for for their hard work and keeping a smile on their face! THANK YOU!

Should have an update before the weekend regarding who may be doing fireworks on the lake.

As always, we are stocked up and ready for the big holiday weekend! Stay safe and we’ll see you soon! Gateway
